Reconciliation in Action
We would like to acknowledge this land upon which we live and learn as the traditional lands of the Kaurna people and we respect their spiritual relationship with Country.
We also acknowledge the Kaurna people as the custodians of the greater Adelaide region and that their cultural and heritage beliefs are still as important to the living Kaurna people today and we give our respect to Elders.
At Chancery Lane Montessori, we aim to ensure that all of our children carry respect and reconciliation in their hearts.
To do this, we embed these values into our classroom learning program and we strengthen them through our connection with St Aloysius College and our commitment to our local community.
Our Chancery Lane Montessori ‘Vision for Reconciliation’ includes…
- Listening
By hearing the voices of members of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, rather than making assumptions or speaking on their behalf, we are able to make meaningful decisions and progress. - Celebrating diversity
We not only acknowledge diversity between groups, but also within groups, to avoid reinforcing stereotypes. - Deconstructing bias
We intentionally and thoughtfully present an anti-bias curriculum that introduces children to an appreciation of diversity, an awareness of the importance of respect for others, an understanding of how history has shaped our world, and a personal commitment to contributing to a positive future for all. - Reconciliation
We recognize that equal rights and reconciliation are an ongoing process and that as educators we can participate in this process, as well as empower children to understand that they also have a role in tending to this unfinished business in the future (Harrison, 2011). We develop, follow and review a Reconciliation Action Plan to remain accountable to our principles over time. - Striving for social justice
We promote and participate in events that improve social justice and educate the next generation about our heritage, such as NAIDOC Week, National Sorry Day, Reconciliation week, and Indigenous Literacy Day. We also carry on the Montessori method’s core values of viewing education as a pathway to peace, with an emphasis on social justice, inclusion and equity built into our learning program and our way of operating. We understand this to be an ongoing process, with our own growth in this area being monitored through critical reflection and evolving through continuous improvement.
Through these principles, we help children build age-appropriate awareness of our stories and histories, respect and appreciation for the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and people, an understanding that all people deserve equality and equity, and a feeling of unity.
In this spirit of unity, we now hand over to one of our Chancery Lane dads who shared his voice to remind is that when we stand together, two worlds colliding, they can never tear us apart!
